Tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz following tanker incidents

A series of maritime security incidents occurred in the Strait of Hormuz between July 31 and August 2, 2026, involving oil tankers. On July 31, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard claimed to have struck two tankers escorted by the U.S. military, alleging they deviated from Iran-designated routes, causing others to retreat. This report was followed by separate notifications from the British maritime security agency UKMTO regarding incidents in the vicinity of the Strait.

On August 1, UKMTO reported that a vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile 11 nautical miles northeast of Lima, Oman, causing engine room damage and leaving the ship disabled. Subsequently, on August 2, another tanker reported an explosion occurring in close proximity to the ship 20 nautical miles northwest of Khasab, Oman. In both cases reported by the UKMTO, authorities confirmed that there were no casualties and the vessels and crews remained safe. No official cause was identified for the explosion on August 2.

The region has long served as a critical chokepoint for global oil transit. These developments follow a period of heightened geopolitical friction in the Gulf, raising concerns over the safety of international commercial navigation in these contested waters.
