Tensions arise between Cyprus education ministry and unions over evaluation committee meeting

In late July 2026, a diplomatic exchange occurred between the Cypriot Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) and the primary teachers' unions, POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK. Following a Monitoring Committee meeting held on July 24, 2026, the three organizations submitted a joint letter on July 28 expressing intense dissatisfaction with the procedural practices utilized during the session. The unions signaled their frustration over how the discussion regarding formative assessment was handled, leading to a breakdown in communication.

In response to these grievances, Marios Panagidis, the General Director of the Ministry, sent a formal reply on July 29. In his correspondence, which became public on August 1, Panagidis stated that the Ministry recognizes the importance of substantive dialogue and remains committed to the principle of constructive cooperation with the unions. The ministry's official stance emphasizes a desire to maintain an open channel with educators regarding ongoing reforms.

The current situation remains characterized by a formal attempt from the Ministry to de-escalate the friction following the unions' expression of dissent. No further meetings or specific resolutions have been announced following the exchange of correspondence, though the dialogue regarding the formative assessment process is expected to continue under the framework of the Monitoring Committee.
