Elderly British man dies in vehicle fire in Avgorou
On the morning of Saturday, August 1, 2026, an 88-year-old British national living in Pakhna died after his vehicle caught fire on a dirt road in the Trullia area of Avgorou. The man was travelling to a local animal shelter with his domestic worker and his dog when the vehicle became stuck in soft ground. According to reports, the driver attempted to free the car, causing the underside of the vehicle to overheat and ignite nearby vegetation, which then engulfed the car in flames.
The domestic worker managed to escape the vehicle unharmed and attempted to assist the elderly man, who suffered from mobility issues, but he urged her to seek help elsewhere. Both the man and his dog perished in the incident. Police, the Fire Service, and the Green Line patrol arrived at the scene around 10:00 a.m. after the fire was spotted. The body was discovered outside the vehicle, specifically on the passenger side.
Authorities have preliminarily ruled out criminal activity, treating the case as a tragic accident. Forensic pathologist Nicolas Charalambous performed an on-site examination, and an official autopsy is scheduled for Monday to confirm the circumstances of the death as investigations continue.
