Elderly man dies in vehicle fire in Avgorou

On the morning of Saturday, August 1, 2026, a tragic incident occurred on a dirt road in the Avgorou area of Cyprus, where an 88-year-old British man lost his life after his vehicle caught fire. The man, a resident of the Paphos/Limassol district, was traveling with his domestic worker and his dog to an animal shelter when the car became stuck on soft ground. As the driver attempted to free the vehicle, the friction allegedly sparked a fire in the undercarriage or nearby vegetation, which quickly engulfed the car.

While the domestic worker managed to escape the vehicle unharmed and sought assistance, the elderly victim was unable to evacuate in time due to reported mobility issues. Both the man and his dog perished in the blaze; the victim’s body was later discovered outside the vehicle. Following the incident, forensic pathologist Nikola Charalambous conducted a post-mortem examination, confirming that the death was caused by charring. Authorities have ruled out criminal activity, treating the case as a tragic accident, and are currently awaiting DNA test results to officially confirm the victim's identity.
