Escalating maritime and aerial strikes between Russia and Ukraine

In recent days, Russia and Ukraine have intensified hostilities involving maritime and oil infrastructure. On July 30, 2026, Greek-managed tankers Nissos Sifnos and Marathi were targeted by drones near the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal off Novorossiysk, resulting in minor damage but no casualties. Subsequently, on August 1, 2026, Ukrainian forces struck three oil refineries in Bashkortostan, located 1,600 kilometers from the border, and sank the Russian-flagged cargo ship Yanina approximately 130 nautical miles south of Novorossiysk. All 17 crew members of the Yanina were rescued, though Russian officials condemned the attack as piracy.

Simultaneously, Russian forces targeted fuel storage infrastructure in the Ukrainian port of Odesa and a tugboat repurposed for military use in Mykolaiv, according to reports from the Russian Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the strikes on Russian facilities are intended to target infrastructure supporting the war effort. Both nations continue to claim that targeted commercial assets are involved in military logistics, significantly increasing risks to navigation in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.
