Critical wildfires continue to ravage Western Attica for the fifth day
A catastrophic wildfire that originated in Viotia on July 31, 2026, has been raging across Western Attica for five consecutive days. The fire has consumed over 130,000 stremmata of land, resulting in the destruction of numerous homes and critical infrastructure. The firefighting efforts, involving 450 personnel, 126 vehicles, and 22 ground units, are focused on three primary sectors: the Kithairon mountain range near Psatha, the Loumpa area near Vilia, and the Kandili region near Megara. Authorities issued multiple evacuation orders via the 112 emergency system for residents in Psatha, Kandili, Ano Vlychada, and surrounding settlements.
The operation is overshadowed by a tragic accident involving two firefighting helicopters in Psatha, which resulted in the deaths of two crew members and injuries to two others. In connection with the blaze's origin in Viotia, authorities have arrested two individuals, including a local mayor, who are suspected of negligence regarding the construction of an electrical transmission network. Investigations are currently ongoing, and the detainees are scheduled to appear before a prosecutor. The situation remains volatile due to shifting winds and difficult terrain, though aerial assistance has been deployed as wind speeds have decreased.
