Deadly wildfires ravage Western Attica for fourth day

A massive, uncontrolled wildfire that began on July 31 in Viotia has spread into Western Attica, devastating the region for a fourth consecutive day. As of August 3, the fire has scorched over 111,000 stremmata, causing significant destruction to homes in areas like Kryo Pigadi and Psatha. The emergency services are currently focusing their containment efforts on two primary fronts: the region near Kandili and the industrial area of Megara. Evacuation orders have been issued repeatedly via the 112 emergency system, forcing residents to relocate toward Nea Peramos and Alepochori.

The firefighting operation, involving 450 personnel, 126 vehicles, and significant aerial support, was marred by a tragic mid-air collision of two firefighting helicopters on August 2 near Psatha. Two crew members, one Greek and one Danish, lost their lives, while two others were injured. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis described the current conditions as extremely challenging due to high temperatures and strong, shifting winds. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have made 33 arrests in five days related to fire-starting incidents. The situation remains critical with ongoing flare-ups and continuous efforts to establish firebreaks.
