Large-scale wildfires threaten communities in Porto Germeno and Boeotia

On August 1, 2026, a severe wildfire broke out in the Porto Germeno region of Greece, escalating into a mega-fire due to gale-force winds. The flames have caused significant destruction, with Dimitris Pagonis, Deputy Mayor of Mandra-Eidyllia, estimating that over 100 homes have been destroyed or damaged. Authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for the settlements of Agia Paraskevi, Kryo Pigadi, Agios Nektarios, and Livadostra, the latter located in the neighboring region of Boeotia.

Emergency response efforts are currently hampered by extreme weather conditions, preventing aerial firefighting assets from effectively dropping water in Porto Germeno and parts of Boeotia. Fire service and Coast Guard vessels successfully evacuated 12 individuals from the Porto Germeno beach area early in the morning. Four distinct fire fronts are active in Porto Germeno, while firefighters in Aigialeia are battling a separate blaze moving toward Arachovitsa. Officials, including Minister of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis, report that the state mechanism is operating at its limits due to multiple simultaneous fronts across the country.
