Major wildfires cause extensive damage in Attica and Boeotia

A series of massive wildfires, classified as a 'mega-fire,' began on Friday, July 31, 2026, in the region of Boeotia and rapidly spread into Western Attica, particularly threatening the Porto Germeno area and the slopes of Mount Kithaeron. The fires have burned over 66,000 to 100,000 stremmata of forest and agricultural land, destroying an estimated 100 to 200 homes. Strong winds have severely hindered aerial firefighting efforts, with authorities frequently forced to ground planes and helicopters due to turbulence and safety risks. Emergency services have issued multiple 112 evacuation orders for settlements including Agia Paraskevi, Kryo Pigadi, Agios Nektarios, Veniza, Psatha, and others.

Over 500 firefighters, assisted by specialized units from France and Romania, as well as military and police personnel, are engaged in the containment operation. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the Boeotia fire after an investigation by the Arson Crimes Division confirmed that electrical sparks from a private wind turbine network ignited the blaze. While some areas like Aigialeia show improvement, the situation remains critical across Attica, Boeotia, Phocis, and Kefalonia. Authorities continue to monitor the fronts as ground and aerial teams battle to prevent further spread toward populated centers like Megara.
