Tensions arise during anti-occupation event in Deryneia
On the evening of August 1, 2026, simultaneous events occurred near the Deryneia roadblock. The Municipality of Famagusta held an anti-occupation event, while a separate gathering took place in occupied Kato Deryneia to mark the Turkish Armed Forces Day. This date commemorates the 1326 founding of the Ottoman army by Orhan Ghazi, which the Turkish Armed Forces claim as their lineage. Participants at the Turkish event played music at high volume, which was audible at the Famagusta Municipality’s gathering, where Mayor Simos Ioannou characterized Famagusta as the heart of national efforts.
Simultaneously, local authorities reported multiple drone incursions originating from occupied areas into the buffer zone and the airspace of the free areas. These incidents have caused concern, prompting officials to evaluate available visual evidence. Relevant authorities are currently reviewing the situation and preparing official demarches regarding the violation of the status quo in the buffer zone.
