Ukrainian drone offensive causes casualties across Russian regions

Over the weekend of August 2-3, 2026, Russia experienced a significant wave of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting multiple regions. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that its air defense systems intercepted 635 drones overnight between Saturday and Sunday. Despite these interceptions, multiple ground strikes caused civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Specifically, fatalities were reported in the Saratov region, while attacks in the Belgorod border region resulted in the death of a 13-year-old girl at a playground. Additional strikes occurred in Crimea and the Krasnodar region, where falling drone debris near a crowded beach in Arkhipo-Osipovka, near Gelendzhik, killed four people and injured ten others.

Russian officials, including the regional governors and children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, condemned the strikes as acts of terror targeting civilian infrastructure. Reports also highlighted major damage to logistics centers, including at least one warehouse owned by the e-commerce company Wildberries. While Moscow asserts that it frequently intercepts incoming drones, the escalation has significantly impacted civilian safety and logistics hubs. Ukrainian authorities have provided no official comments on these specific incidents, and emergency services remain deployed in the affected areas to manage the aftermath.
