88-year-old British national dies in vehicle fire in Avgorou
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, an 88-year-old British national residing in Pakhna was found dead following a vehicle fire on a dirt road in the village of Avgorou, located in the Famagusta district. The man, accompanied by his housekeeper and a dog, was traveling to an animal shelter when their vehicle became stuck in loose soil.
According to reports from local authorities, the victim attempted to free the vehicle by spinning the tires, which reportedly generated sparks that ignited nearby dry reeds. The fire spread rapidly to the car. While the housekeeper managed to escape the scene safely, the elderly man was unable to exit the vehicle and perished along with the dog.
Police from the Republic of Cyprus are currently investigating the incident as an accidental death. While preliminary information suggests the fire was caused by the friction of the tires against the ground, official forensic examinations and investigative procedures are still underway to confirm the precise circumstances and the exact cause of the blaze.
