Hungary shuts down Paks nuclear plant due to record-low Danube water levels

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has announced the total shutdown of the Paks nuclear power plant, the country's only such facility, as water levels in the Danube River have reached historic lows. The plant, located approximately 100 kilometers south of Budapest, relies on the river for cooling its four Soviet-era reactors. While reports vary on whether this is the first such occurrence in 44 or 50 years, the shutdown marks a significant energy crisis for the nation, as the facility typically accounts for between 40% and 50% of Hungary's annual electricity production.

The shutdown coincides with an extreme heatwave forecast for the next five days, placing immense pressure on the national electricity distribution network and public services. To manage the shortfall, the government is issuing a decree mandating voluntary energy reductions for large consumers, with potential for enforced restrictions if targets are not met. The Prime Minister has urgently requested that businesses, local governments, and households significantly reduce electricity consumption during peak hours to ensure grid stability while the country faces this critical energy challenge.
