Cyprus concludes Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with historic judo gold

The Cypriot delegation finished the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with a triumphant performance, securing a total of 12 medals. On the final day, Yiannis Antoniou achieved a major milestone by winning Cyprus' first gold medal of the games in the men’s +100kg judo category after defeating Australian Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi. Following this victory, the Cyprus Olympic Committee announced that Antoniou will serve as the country's flag bearer during the closing ceremony.

The final day of competition also saw additional success in judo, with Zanet Michaelidou winning bronze in the women’s under 78kg event, and Georgos Kroussaniotakis securing bronze in the men’s under 100kg category after defeating his compatriot Aristos Michael. These achievements built upon earlier successes from the week, including a bronze medal won by Odysseas Georgakis in the men’s under 81kg category on Saturday.

Overall, the Cypriot team concluded the Games with one gold, five silver, and six bronze medals, placing them 14th in the overall standings. Earlier in the week, athletes from other disciplines contributed to the final tally, including gymnasts Marios Georgiou and Neofytos Kyriacou, hurdler Milan Trajkovic, and hammer thrower Iosif Kesidis. The judo team’s performance was particularly notable, as the squad demonstrated consistency throughout the competition.
