Cyprus concludes Commonwealth Games with 12 medals in Glasgow

The 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow concluded on August 2, 2026, with the Cypriot delegation securing a total of 12 medals. Represented by 36 athletes, Cyprus finished 14th in the overall medal table, marking a significant achievement in the nation's sporting history. The final haul consisted of one gold, five silver, and six bronze medals.

Judo was the standout sport, contributing six of the total medals. Giannis Antoniou secured the island's only gold in the men’s +100kg category, defeating Australian Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi. Other notable judo successes included silver for Sofia Asvesta and Giorgi Balartashvili, and bronzes for Petros Christodoulides, Odysseas Georgakis, Zanet Michaelidou, and Georgos Kroussaniotakis. Beyond judo, Cyprus earned medals in gymnastics, athletics, and weightlifting.

Following his victory, Giannis Antoniou served as the flagbearer for Cyprus during the closing ceremony at OVO Hydro. President Nikos Christodoulides and the Cyprus Sports Organisation issued formal statements praising the athletes for their dedication and performance. The next Commonwealth Games are scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad, India, in 2030, marking the centennial of the event.
