Cyprus judo team achieves major success at Glasgow Commonwealth Games

The Cypriot judo team continued its strong performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, concluding their campaign with multiple medals. On Saturday, Odysseas Georgakis won bronze in the men’s -81kg category after defeating Gabonese athlete Fernand Nkero with an ippon. Additional success followed during the final day of judo events, where Zanet Michaelidou claimed bronze by defeating English judoka Shelley Ludford. In the -100kg category, Giorgos Kroussaniotakis secured bronze after competing against teammate Aristos Michael.

Prior to these results, the team had already secured medals through Sofia Asvesta (silver), Giorgi Balartashvili (silver), and Petros Christodoulides (bronze). Meanwhile, Giannis Antoniou advanced to the final of the +100kg category after overcoming Joshua Whitehouse and Kody Andrews with ippons, setting up a gold-medal match against Australia’s Kayhan Ozcicek-Takagi. These achievements mark a highly successful run for the Cyprus Judo Federation, with the delegation maintaining a streak where every competing athlete earned a podium finish.
