Odysseas Georgakis wins bronze in judo at the Commonwealth Games

Cypriot judoka Odysseas Georgakis secured a bronze medal in the men’s under 81kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday, August 1, 2026. After a narrow defeat in the semi-finals following a golden point period, Georgakis recovered to defeat Fernand Nkero of Gabon by ippon in the bronze medal match. The event was attended by the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton.

This victory marks the fourth medal for the Cypriot judo team at these games and the ninth overall for the Cyprus Commonwealth Games Association. The team has maintained a high success rate throughout the tournament, with athletes Sofia Asvesta, Giorgi Balartashvili, and Petros Christodoulides also securing medals in their respective categories. The judo contingent has achieved a perfect record, with every participating athlete winning a medal.
