Migrants depart Spanish enclave of Ceuta after failed crossing attempts

Following a surge in arrivals earlier this week, thousands of migrants who entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa are now choosing to return to Morocco. Many individuals who initially crossed by swimming or scaling border fences reported finding themselves trapped without access to mainland Spain. Migrants stated that their expectations were fueled by social media videos and misinformation suggesting that the border was open and passage to Europe was readily available.

Upon arrival, those who successfully crossed described dire humanitarian conditions, citing chronic hunger, exhaustion, and a hostile environment. Reports from those departing characterize the situation in Ceuta as similar to being in a prison, with many expressing deep disappointment that their hopes for a new life in Europe were crushed.
