Cyprus police conduct nationwide speed enforcement campaign

The Cyprus Police have launched an intensive, nationwide traffic enforcement campaign focused on speeding, scheduled to run from August 3 to August 9, 2026. This initiative is part of a broader cooperation with the European Traffic Police Network (ROADPOL) and is being implemented simultaneously across all European Union member states to enhance road safety. Authorities report that excess speed is a major contributing factor in traffic collisions, cited as the primary cause in one out of every ten fatal accidents over the past four years.

As the campaign progresses, police have been conducting significant check operations across the island. On the night of August 4, authorities stopped 525 vehicles and checked 681 individuals, resulting in 106 reports for speeding and the impounding of 13 vehicles. Subsequent operations reported on August 6 saw 450 vehicles checked, with an additional 88 speeding violations recorded and 10 more vehicles impounded. The ongoing initiative serves as both an awareness campaign and an enforcement effort to curb road accidents and improve general public safety.
