Cyprus municipalities hold three-hour work stoppage over state funding

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou rejected claims of financial suffocation, stating that the current grant of €117 million is based on a 2022 legislative agreement that increased the state's share of municipal revenue from 22% to 37%. The government maintains that it has integrated additional costs, such as road maintenance and community services, and that overall funding will reach €156 million by 2027. While the ministry calls for dialogue, municipal leaders continue to demand a formal indexation mechanism to adjust funding in line with actual operating costs and rising inflationary pressures.
