Cyprus municipalities to hold three-hour strike over funding dispute

Municipalities across Cyprus are set to stage a three-hour work stoppage on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 9:00 to 12:00, in protest against what they describe as insufficient state funding. The protest will lead to the suspension of services in secretariats, accounting departments, and public service offices, impacting citizens across the country.

The Union of Municipalities rejected a revised government proposal from the Ministry of Interior, which aimed to increase the total state subsidy to over €156 million for 2027. While the government offered an additional €8.2 million, modified the calculation formula for primary expenditures, and allocated specific funds for licensing revenue losses and road maintenance, the Union maintains that an extra €11.5 million is required to address inflation and ensure administrative autonomy. The current state subsidy of €117 million is viewed by the Union as the lowest in Europe relative to GDP.

Despite last-minute negotiations between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Finance to prevent the strike, the Union of Municipalities decided to proceed with the action, emphasizing that the government’s concessions fail to meet their fundamental financial requirements for local governance reform.
