Arrest made in murder of British woman found in Kypseli suitcase

Greek authorities have arrested a 26-year-old Afghan national for the murder of 38-year-old British citizen Elisabeth Jane Ross, whose decomposed body was discovered inside a suitcase in an abandoned building in Kypseli on July 18, 2026. Ross had arrived in Greece from Edinburgh on June 29. Police identified the suspect after a British acquaintance of the victim reported that the man had confessed to the crime to his partner, who is also British.

The suspect allegedly withdrew 10,000 euros from the victim's bank accounts. Initial reports of his motivation vary; while one version suggests the killing was related to a conflict over the victim’s attempt to convert the suspect's partner to Christianity, investigation also revealed the suspect sent misleading text messages claiming to be a jihadist to misdirect police. Upon his arrest, police recovered a replica pistol and a knife, leading to additional charges for weapons violations. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody to face charges of intentional homicide and robbery.

Following the discovery, forensics experts used fingerprint analysis to identify the victim despite the condition of the remains. The investigation remains focused on clarifying the motive and verifying the sequence of events leading to the victim's death.
