Cyprus launches new financial tool to support agricultural sector investments
The Cypriot government has announced a new financial tool designed to provide liquidity to farmers, addressing a long-standing obstacle to agricultural investment. Developed through a three-year effort involving multiple ministries, the Legal Service, the Agricultural Payments Organization (KOAP), and private lenders including the Bank of Cyprus and Eurobank, the initiative allows beneficiaries of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to access financing before receiving official public aid. Only formal signatures remain pending to finalize the agreement, with implementation scheduled for later this year.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is executing the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan for the Common Agricultural Policy, which allocates over 450 million euros to rural development. Minister Maria Panayiotou and Director General Andreas Gregoriou have highlighted that these funds support local growth strategies, including the LEADER intervention tool. In the Paphos region specifically, 2.8 million euros have been earmarked for local development projects. These measures aim to modernize rural economies, prevent social exclusion, and protect the natural environment while enabling producers to implement investment plans immediately.
