Shark encounters reported in California waters

Two separate incidents involving great white sharks were reported in California waters between late July and early August 2026. In the first event, occurring at a Santa Monica beach, a fisherman was filmed struggling to free a great white shark from his fishing line. The man used heavy-duty cutters to remove the hook from the animal's mouth while attempting to guide it back into the surf, overcoming the difficulty of maneuvering the slippery predator on the sand.

In a separate incident reported on August 2, 2026, a spear fisherman experienced a tense encounter in open water when a great white shark swam directly toward him. The diver remained calm during the close proximity meeting and managed to exit the water unharmed.
