Firefighting operations in Limassol district following two separate incidents

Two separate forest fires occurred in the Limassol district of Cyprus over the weekend of August 2–3, 2026. The first fire broke out on Sunday, August 2, at 17:25 near the Saints Sergius and Bacchus Monastery in the village of Monagri. It was brought under full control within ten minutes by a joint force of four vehicles from the Forestry Department and the Fire Service, causing only minor damage to grass and low vegetation.

The second, more significant incident began at 03:30 on Monday, August 3, in a rugged forested area of Prasteio Kellakiou. This blaze burned two hectares of pine forest and prompted the activation of the 'ASTRAPI' emergency plan. A large operation involving 50 Forestry Department personnel, 10 Fire Service members, volunteer teams, and two leased aircraft successfully contained the fire by 07:00. Local authorities sent an emergency notification via the CY Alert system to residents. The cause of the Prasteio Kellakiou fire is currently under investigation, with officials suggesting that hot coals thrown into a trash bin may have ignited the flames.
