Forest fires caused by industrial work and beekeeping activity in Limassol and Larnaca
Two separate wildfires broke out in Cyprus on August 4, 2026, sparked by human activity. The first fire, in the Limassol district near Agios Mamas, Lania, and Limnatis, began at 11:15 and was controlled by 12:40. It burned 1.5 hectares of land, caused by sparks from an angle grinder used by individuals cutting scrap metal. Local police are searching for the suspects who fled the scene.
The second incident occurred later in the afternoon at 16:50 near the Stavrovouni State Forest in the Anglisides area, Larnaca district. This fire, which burned 0.4 hectares of vegetation, was linked to beekeeping work. The director of the Forestry Department, Dr. Savvas Iezekiel, confirmed that an amateur beekeeper accidentally started the fire while using a smoker. The fire was extinguished by 17:30 following a rapid response from the Forestry Department and Fire Service, who activated the 'Astrapi' and 'Hephaestus II' emergency plans. An investigation is ongoing, and the beekeeper has admitted responsibility for the incident.
