Recent wildfires in Monagri and Prasteio Kellakiou

Two separate wildfire incidents occurred in the Limassol district during early August 2026. On August 2, a fire broke out at 17:25 near the Saints Sergius and Bacchus Monastery in Monagri. It was brought under control within ten minutes by a joint effort from the Forestry Department and the Fire Service, burning only a small area of dry grass.

On August 3, a larger fire erupted around 03:30 in the Prasteio Kellakiou area. The response involved approximately 50 personnel, eight fire trucks, four bulldozers, and aerial support under the 'ASTRAPI' emergency plan. The fire burned about two hectares of wild vegetation before being contained by 07:00. Authorities utilized the CY Alert system to notify residents of a potential evacuation, though no homes were damaged. Official investigations into the causes of both fires are ongoing, with investigators suggesting that discarded charcoal might be responsible for the Prasteio Kellakiou incident. Emergency services remain on high alert for potential reignitions.
