Wildfires in Limassol district during early August 2026
Two significant wildfires broke out in the Limassol district of Cyprus between August 3 and August 4, 2026. The first incident occurred early on August 3 in the Prasteio Kellakiou area, where a fire burned two hectares of pine forest. Authorities suspect it was ignited by lit coals discarded in a rubbish bin. A massive coordinated response involving 50 Forestry Department personnel, firefighters, and volunteers, along with aerial support, successfully contained the blaze by 7:00 AM.
The second incident occurred on August 4 in the Anentrada area, near the village of Agios Mamas and between Lania and Limnatis. This fire, which started at 11:15 AM, burned 1.5 hectares of agricultural crops and wild vegetation before being controlled at 12:40 PM. Investigations revealed that the fire was caused by sparks generated during the use of a metal-cutting tool, specifically an angle grinder. A large multi-agency task force, including 45 Forestry Department members, 17 firefighters, and civil defense personnel, supported by five aircraft, prevented the fire from spreading to residential areas. No serious injuries or structural damage were reported in either incident as authorities remain vigilant regarding fire safety during the hot season.
