Central Bank of Cyprus reports financial asset and debt figures for Q1 2026
On Friday, the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) released its Quarterly Financial Accounts, detailing the financial status of households and non-financial corporations as of the end of March 2026. The report shows that household financial assets reached 65.3 billion euros, while their total debt stood at 20.1 billion euros. This brings the household debt-to-GDP ratio to 55%, marking a marginal increase compared to the previous quarter, though a significant 63% reduction since December 2016.
Regarding the composition of household assets, 53% is held in cash, deposits, and loans, 26% in shares, 17% in other financial assets, and 4% in securities. Simultaneously, the non-financial corporate sector reported financial assets of 79.6 billion euros and a total debt of 40 billion euros. The debt-to-GDP ratio for these corporations reached 109%, also reflecting a marginal rise from the prior quarter but a substantial 97% decline since December 2016. Asset distribution for non-financial firms includes 22% in cash and deposits and 5% in other categories. These figures illustrate long-term deleveraging trends in the Cypriot economy despite minor quarterly fluctuations.
