Authorities investigate alleged approach of witness in trial of Paphos mayor
Police authorities have launched an investigation into allegations that the defense team in the trial of Paphos Mayor Phaidonas Phaidonos approached a prosecution witness. The mayor is currently suspended and faces rape charges in a case being heard at the Paphos Assize Court. Investigators from a district Criminal Investigation Department outside of Paphos have begun collecting statements from individuals reportedly aware of the out-of-court contact.
The alleged incident involves an expert witness who previously provided sworn testimony regarding telecommunication data and referenced an overseas organization capable of performing forensic data analysis. It is reported that individuals acting on behalf of the defense sought to uncover the identity of this external entity outside of the courtroom. While some sources suggest that the witness had already completed their sworn testimony before the incident, potentially complicating claims of witness tampering, legal authorities are still evaluating the event.
The court proceedings are currently held behind closed doors. The trial is scheduled to resume on September 10, when further legal assessments regarding the incident are expected to be addressed.
