Health authorities issue safety warnings as temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celsius
Medical professionals and health services have issued urgent guidance as extreme temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. Experts, including pathologist Kostas Schizas, warn that prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity carries significant health risks, specifically noting the dangers of heatstroke and heat exhaustion.
To mitigate these risks, citizens are advised to avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 and 17:00, when temperatures peak. Health authorities emphasize the necessity of frequent hydration, even in the absence of thirst, and recommend wearing light-colored, natural-fiber clothing, hats, and sunglasses. Strenuous outdoor activities should be rescheduled for cooler periods of the day.
In cases of heatstroke, which may present with symptoms such as dizziness, delirium, or seizures, it is crucial to move the individual to a cool area, apply cold compresses or ice, and seek medical attention immediately. These measures are distinct from managing simple heat exhaustion, which typically involves fluid and electrolyte loss and requires careful rehydration.
