Arrests made following suspicious wildfires in Cyprus

Cypriot authorities have initiated a crackdown on suspected arsonists following a surge in rural wildfires, with over 1,450 incidents recorded since the beginning of 2026. Fire Chief Nikos Longinos stated that more than 90 percent of fires are human-caused, with recent intelligence indicating organized, malicious activity involving multiple ignition points in close proximity.

The most significant case concerns an incident on August 2 in the Kornos area, where motorists witnessed two individuals starting a fire and fleeing the scene. Quick intervention by the public prevented the blaze from spreading. Following this, police identified and arrested a 26-year-old male and a 28-year-old female on charges including conspiracy to commit a felony and attempted forest arson. The 26-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the Larnaca District Court to face remand proceedings.

Simultaneously, Cyprus has reaffirmed its solidarity with Greece as that country battles severe, large-scale wildfires. President Nikos Christodoulides and House President Annita Demetriou have both expressed deep concern and offered immediate assistance, noting the ongoing regional climate crisis that exacerbates these catastrophes.
