Cyprus expresses solidarity with Greece over wildfires and reports surge in local arson

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with Greece regarding the devastating wildfires that have plagued the country for four days. The Republic of Cyprus remains in constant contact with the Greek government through the National Coordinator for Civil Protection, Nikos Longinos, and has declared its readiness to provide immediate firefighting assistance, including aerial support, if requested. The fires in Greece have already resulted in two fatalities following a helicopter collision on Sunday near the coastal town of Psatha.

Simultaneously, the situation in Cyprus has become concerning, with Chief Fire Officer Nikos Longinos reporting over 1,450 rural wildfires since the beginning of 2026. Authorities suspect malicious intent behind a recent surge in fires, noting instances where multiple ignition points were discovered in close proximity. A third-country national is currently wanted under an arrest warrant after being identified by a witness for allegedly igniting fireworks in Kornos, which sparked a fire. Other recent blazes, including one in Prasteio Kellakiou, have required a multi-agency response from the Forestry Department, Civil Defense, and local police as investigations into potential arson continue.
