Two arrested for attempted forest arson in Kornos

On the evening of Sunday, August 2, 2026, around 7:00 p.m., a forest fire was ignited in the Kornos area. Citizens driving through the location observed two individuals getting into a vehicle and leaving the scene after a ground firework was activated. The witnesses successfully extinguished the fire themselves before it could spread to the surrounding forest.

Following police investigations, two Brazilian nationals, a 26-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were arrested. They face multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit a felony, attempted arson in a forest, reckless acts, and illegal possession of explosives. The suspects claimed they purchased the fireworks from a local kiosk, but they failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for their presence in the forest area.

On Tuesday, August 4, the Larnaca District Court ordered the two suspects to be held in custody for eight days as police continue their investigation, which includes examining the mobile phones of both individuals and tracing the source of the fireworks.
