Exhumation of victims from the 1974 Athalassa Hospital bombing

Archaeological excavations conducted in November 2017 at the Athalassa Hospital in Cyprus have provided detailed insights into the tragic events of July 20, 1974. On that date, the Turkish air force bombed the hospital, targeting a nearby military camp that served as an ammunition storage site, which resulted in the destruction of Wards 1 and 2. The attack claimed the lives of 33 people, including 31 patients—three of whom were Turkish Cypriots—and two nurses. The victims were aged between 22 and 80.

Archaeologist Michalis Iakovidis and nurse T. Christodoulou, who participated in the recovery efforts, reported the discovery of remains wrapped in blankets and sheets, consistent with witness accounts. Key findings from the site included personal items such as eyeglasses and medicinal ampoules labeled 'Serenace,' as well as remarkably preserved clothing. While the bodies of two victims were returned to their families for burial shortly after the attack, the long-term project aimed to recover the remaining victims to provide closure. The proximity of the facility to the targeted military zone is considered the primary reason for the heavy casualties at the hospital.
