Diplomatic efforts for Cyprus talks following UN Secretary-General's visit

Following the recent visit of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Cyprus, both Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman have signaled their readiness to pursue progress toward a potential 5+1 format summit. Guterres emphasized that any such expanded meeting must be preceded by substantial preparation, covering confidence-building measures, negotiation methodology, and substantive issues, to ensure a successful outcome rather than a repeat of previous unproductive sessions.

Tufan Erhurman stated that the 'homework' for Nicosia is clear, noting that the Turkish Cypriot side remains ready to meet with Christodoulides on a weekly basis to move the process forward. Meanwhile, the presidential press office in the Republic of Cyprus confirmed that President Christodoulides is prepared to undertake any necessary steps to resume talks, emphasizing the importance of continuing from the convergences established in Crans-Montana in 2017.

While officials seek a path forward, media reports have highlighted procedural critiques regarding the diplomatic etiquette displayed during the trilateral meeting. Turkish media outlets focused on personal interactions between the leaders and the UN Secretary-General, contrasting the rapport of the participants while underscoring the complexities of the regional political climate, including Turkey’s influence and ongoing geopolitical concerns.
