Cyprus commemorates the 49th anniversary of Archbishop Makarios' death

Political parties in Cyprus marked the 49th anniversary of the death of Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of the Republic of Cyprus, who passed away in 1977. Commemorative statements were issued by AKEL, DIKO, EDEK, and DIPA to honor his legacy and historical role.

AKEL highlighted his contribution to the anti-colonial struggle and his opposition to the EOKA B organization and the 1974 coup, while condemning attempts by right-wing factions to distort history. DIKO and DIPA emphasized the need to preserve the independence of the Republic of Cyprus as a legacy of his political leadership. Meanwhile, EDEK focused on the necessity of a sustainable solution to the Cyprus problem, advocating for the removal of Turkish occupation troops and the implementation of European Union standards across the island.
