Cyprus National Council meets to discuss developments in the Cyprus issue

President Nikos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the National Council on August 3, 2026, to brief political leaders on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue. The session, which lasted over two and a half hours, focused on the recent visits of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the newly appointed EU Special Representative for the Cyprus issue, Raffaele Fitto, to the island.

During the meeting, officials discussed the diplomatic roadmap aimed at convening an expanded conference on the Cyprus issue, a goal supported by the UN. Technical-level preparatory work has already commenced in cooperation with the United Nations and is expected to continue throughout August. President Christodoulides emphasized that this period is critical for laying the groundwork for successful future negotiations, with the aim of restarting talks from the point where they stalled at Crans-Montana.

Political figures present, including former President Nicos Anastasiades and various party leaders, exchanged views on the next steps. While some officials stressed the need for collective responsibility and discretion in public statements to allow diplomacy to progress, reports indicate that Guterres has presented a specific plan for the upcoming months. The government has confirmed that preparatory efforts remain the priority for the current period.
