Diplomatic preparations for Cyprus talks intensification

The meeting serves as a critical step in the preparatory process requested by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to facilitate a new expanded '5+1' conference aimed at resuming formal negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.

Preparatory work is currently underway, involving the UN Secretariat and external experts, including a constitutional law specialist, to reaffirm existing convergences reached in previous rounds of talks. While the government of the Republic of Cyprus emphasizes its readiness to proceed, there is ongoing friction regarding confidence-building measures (CBMs), particularly concerning the opening of new crossing points. President Christodoulides and the Turkish Cypriot side have exchanged conflicting accounts regarding these proposals, with Erhurman disputing the rejection of UN-backed plans and citing additional demands, including the inclusion of the Louroujina area in the package.

Political tensions remain high, as opposition figures like Averof Neofytou have criticized the President's handling of the situation, urging tangible progress on checkpoints to improve cooperation. Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot side continues to assert its conditions regarding EU involvement and direct trade, maintaining a stance that rejects EU participation as a formal party to the negotiations.
