Diplomatic preparations for Cyprus talks intensify
President Nikos Christodoulides held a meeting of the National Council on August 3, 2026, to brief political leaders on his recent consultations with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and EU envoy Raffaele Fitto. The discussion focused on establishing the necessary conditions for a proposed 5+1 expanded conference aimed at resuming formal negotiations for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue.
To facilitate this process, the UN has initiated technical preparations to document historical convergences between the two communities. This effort involves international experts, including constitutional lawyer John McGarry, who previously served as a senior advisor during the 2017 Crans-Montana talks. While these preparations continue throughout August, President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman are scheduled to meet on August 26, 2026, under the auspices of the UN to evaluate the progress made.
Political tensions remain, as opposition figure Averof Neofytou has criticized the government's progress regarding the opening of new crossing points. Meanwhile, government officials confirmed that efforts to implement confidence-building measures face complications, as proposals from the UN Secretary-General regarding border crossings have encountered resistance and counter-demands from the Turkish Cypriot leadership.
