Turkey updates military readiness in Cyprus amid rising regional cooperation

Reports from the newspaper Kathimerini indicate that Nicosia is in advanced discussions to acquire Israeli Merkava III and IV main battle tanks to replace its aging Russian-made fleet. This potential acquisition follows previous procurements of Israeli Aerostar drones and the BARAK-MX air defense system. Turkish officials are analyzing these activities, viewing the geopolitical upgrade of Cyprus as a challenge to the regional status quo. Additionally, reports suggest Turkey is attempting to exert diplomatic influence in Lebanon to prevent closer alignment between Beirut, Nicosia, and Athens.
