Vasos Koutsiountas appointed as Director General of the Cyprus Sports Organization
The Cyprus Sports Organization has officially appointed Dr. Vasos Koutsiountas as its new Director General. The appointment was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on July 22, 2026, and takes effect immediately as the organization seeks to strengthen its national leadership and strategic development initiatives.
Dr. Koutsiountas brings extensive experience to the role, having served as the head of financial services at the organization since August 2002. Since December 2025, he has been acting as Deputy Director General, a position he previously held between 2013 and 2014. Throughout his long tenure, he has been credited with modernizing the organization's operational framework and advancing its strategic planning efforts.
An alumnus of the American Academy in Larnaca, Koutsiountas holds a degree in Industrial Economics from the University of Nottingham and a PhD in Sports Organization Governance from the University of Central Lancashire. He is also a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Beyond his national responsibilities, he represents the Republic of Cyprus on the European stage regarding sports governance matters.
