Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus shows signs of decline

The foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus is currently under control and entering a phase of remission, according to Dimitris Epameinondas, a member of the epidemiological team and President of the Pancyprian Veterinary Association. Officials report that double vaccinations have been completed in over 90% of livestock units nationwide, and all facilities have tested negative, with the exception of two units that remain under investigation.

The second phase of epidemiological surveillance, which began in mid-June, has covered more than 30% of all livestock units in Cyprus. Authorities believe the current data indicates a positive trend in curbing the spread of the virus. Furthermore, high summer temperatures are contributing to the destruction of the virus and limiting its transmission.

While the situation is under control, officials emphasize that vigilance remains necessary. Further easing of existing restrictions is contingent upon increasing the rate of epidemiological surveillance to reach a significantly higher testing percentage. The veterinary authorities continue to monitor the two remaining units under review to ensure the total eradication of the outbreak.
