Cyprus police launch week-long speeding enforcement campaign

From August 3 to August 9, 2026, the Cyprus Police are conducting an island-wide campaign to enforce speed limit compliance. This initiative is part of a synchronized operation organized by the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL) across all European Union member states. The primary objective is to reduce the frequency and severity of traffic accidents, as police officials emphasize that speeding remains a critical factor in fatal road collisions, accounting for approximately one in ten deaths on Cyprus roads in recent years.

Throughout this week, patrol frequency will be significantly increased in both urban areas and on intercity highways. While there is no specific 24-hour speed marathon this time, officials are maintaining constant pressure to ensure road safety. Drivers found exceeding the speed limit by 75% or more face severe legal consequences, including potential court appearances, up to one year of imprisonment, fines reaching 4,000 euros, and the loss of driving privileges accompanied by 4 to 8 penalty points.
