Greek parliamentary representative attends anti-occupation events in Cyprus

The Second Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament, Georgios Georgantas, visited Nicosia between July 31 and August 3, 2026, to represent Greece at the annual anti-occupation events organized by the Municipality of Famagusta. During his visit, Georgantas held high-level meetings with Cypriot officials, including President Nikos Christodoulides, to discuss the current status of the Cyprus problem.

Discussions between the Greek representative and President Christodoulides centered on the critical timing for potential negotiations. President Christodoulides expressed optimism that the UN Secretary-General's initiative, combined with increased involvement from the European Union, could create a renewed window of opportunity for a breakthrough. Georgantas emphasized that any comprehensive resolution must be strictly aligned with European principles and the acquis communautaire.

The visit underscored the ongoing cooperation between Athens and Nicosia regarding the settlement of the Cyprus issue. While no immediate court or diplomatic action was scheduled, the dialogue reinforced the Greek government's commitment to supporting Cyprus in advocating for a solution that upholds EU standards as a fundamental framework for reunification.
