Cabinet reshuffle preparations in Cyprus cause political tension

President Nikos Christodoulides is finalizing a long-awaited cabinet reshuffle, aiming to consolidate his team ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. While official announcements are pending, public speculation has intensified due to leaks involving potential candidates, particularly those from the DIKO party. DIKO leader Nikolas Papadopoulos confirmed that his party has exchanged views and names with the President to support the government's work, though he emphasized that final decisions remain with the President.

The proposed appointments, including names such as Tina Pavlou and Christos Angelidis, have caused friction with the opposition party DISY. DISY leader Annita Dimitriou expressed clear annoyance regarding these developments, criticizing the potential move of party-linked individuals into the government. While Christodoulides has avoided setting a specific deadline, stating only that "everything will happen in due time," reports suggest announcements may occur by mid-week, partly due to timing constraints regarding administrative personnel changes.

The reshuffle appears intended to strengthen the government's political base by integrating figures from outside his immediate circle, including some formerly affiliated with DISY. Despite the political maneuvering, the administration remains focused on ongoing policy matters, including developments in the Cyprus issue, as discussed during recent National Council sessions.
