Cyprus intelligence chief visits Beirut amid maritime boundary tensions

Tasos Tzionis, the Director of the Cyprus Intelligence Service (KYP), conducted a series of political and security meetings in Beirut during June 2026. This visit was officially confirmed by the Cypriot government, though Nicosia declined to comment on the specific agenda or the identities of his counterparts. The trip came to public attention following a report by the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.

According to the media report, Tzionis held discussions with Lebanese army commander General Rodolphe Haikal and the Director of Military Intelligence, Brigadier General Tony Kahwaji. The report also alleged that Tzionis met with the leadership of Hezbollah, although it provided no specifics on participants or discussion topics. The primary focus of the diplomatic mission reportedly involved bilateral relations, specifically emphasizing the enforcement of the maritime border and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement signed between Cyprus and Lebanon on November 26, 2025.

This diplomatic effort is framed against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Nicosia and Ankara, as Turkey continues to contest Cypriot actions regarding maritime zoning and energy exploration in the Eastern Mediterranean. Tzionis reportedly urged Lebanese officials to maintain their commitment to the 2025 agreement, as Nicosia seeks to solidify its position in regional energy negotiations.
