Heavy rains and flooding hit southern India causing 14 deaths

Over the weekend of August 1-2, 2026, intense monsoon rains and subsequent flooding struck the southern Indian state of Kerala, resulting in at least 11 deaths. In the neighboring state of Karnataka, a landslide triggered by the extreme weather claimed at least three additional lives, bringing the total death toll to 14 in the region.

In Kerala, the disaster prompted a massive humanitarian response. Authorities reported that approximately 7,700 people have been evacuated from their homes and are currently housed in 275 government-operated shelters. The state government has ordered the closure of schools as a precaution against further danger.

Kerala’s Chief Minister, V. D. Satheesan, announced that he would meet with regional officials today, Monday, August 3, to review the management and facilities of the emergency shelters. While clean-up operations have commenced in the hardest-hit zones, local disaster management authorities warn that the region continues to face moderate rainfall and strong winds, necessitating ongoing vigilance.
