DISY leader calls for unity and diplomacy regarding Cyprus talks

On Monday, August 3, 2026, the President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, emphasized the urgent need to utilize the current period to restart meaningful negotiations on the Cyprus issue. Following a session of the National Council, where the political leadership was briefed by the President of the Republic on recent visits by the UN Secretary-General and Mr. Fitto, Demetriou urged for collective responsibility and methodical preparation.

She stressed that the goal remains to revive the process from the point where it stalled at Crans-Montana, operating within the agreed UN framework and European principles. Demetriou cautioned against political maneuvering, advocating for restraint in public statements to allow diplomacy to function effectively.

Following the National Council meeting, DISY announced a session of its Political Bureau, scheduled for Monday evening. This meeting aims to discuss the latest developments with party members and the Advisory Group on the Cyprus issue. This follows previous consultations held with mayors and community leaders from occupied territories, underscoring the party's ongoing internal review and preparation process regarding the national question.
