Afghan national arrested for murder of British woman in Athens

A 26-year-old Afghan national has been arrested in connection with the murder of a British woman, whose body was discovered inside a suitcase in the Kypseli district of Athens. The victim, who arrived from Edinburgh on June 29, was known for her history of volunteering with various humanitarian organizations. Police were able to trace the suspect by tracking the victim's mobile phone signal, which was active after her death and eventually located in Arachova before being switched off last Wednesday. Subsequent analysis of CCTV footage and investigation of a shared residence in Kypseli led officers to the suspect.

Investigators allege that the suspect attempted to misdirect the investigation by sending fake text messages to the victim’s acquaintances and family, falsely claiming to be a jihadist who killed the woman due to her religion. The suspect, who reportedly converted from Islam to Protestantism, allegedly confessed to his partner that he killed the woman after she repeatedly discussed Christianity with him. Homicide detectives are currently continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the murder as the legal proceedings move forward.
